I received the following email from a student about in the third week of the semester. I reproduce it verbatim.
Professor Heppner, my name is xxxxxxxxxx and i am a freshman in your class. Unfortunately I was unable to attend your class on Friday September 22 due to the fact of some very bad news on my half. My father has been locked up in the Adult Correctional Institute (ACI) for more than half of his life.I rearly see him and when i do its for about an hour at a time. Well on Wednesday he was admitted to Roger Williams hospital because of some sort of sickness. He was throwing up blood and has really bad pains in his stomach. Since the prision guards would not let us see him yesterday me and my mom are going to try again in the morning. I understand by missing class I will miss my mini quiz and a lecture but i had no choice weather to go or not. So i hope youcan understand my situation and hopfully work with me to give me a makeup I would really appraciate it. Thanks.
Naturally, I had to check this one out. All true. Sometimes big classes aren't a whole lot of fun.
